The past few weeks Megan has started asking questions about how things work around the house. Here are a few examples.
While watching me brush my teeth one day she asked, "Mommy, where does the water go?" I showed her the water goes down the drain. Then she asked, "Then where it goes?" I showed her the pipes under the sink. She then proceeded to study the pipes under the sink while repeating, "The water goes down the draim and down the pipe." Can you guess the next question? Yep! "Mommy, then where it goes?" I told here there were more pipes. She was amazed and told everyone she saw and talked to on the phone for the next few days about her new discovery.
Next was the potty. She had so "endearingly" filled the bowl with flushable wipes. (she likes to watch them "melt") And then flushed. Fortunately, I ran in just in time to turn off the water and prevent mass flooding. I had to explain to her that she cannot put too many wipes in there because they get stuck in the pipe and then the water can't go down the pipe. She looked at me wide-eyed. As if I just revealed to her one of the grand mysteries of life. "Ok, Mommy. I won't do it again." Lather, rinse, repeat with toilet paper about an hour later.
While sitting on the potty one day (where all grand ideas such as the flux capacitor are thought of), Megan looked up at the ceiling in the hallway and pointed to the air intake for our heating/air. "What's that? Is that a fan?" Someone please remind me I need to vacuum that vent cover, it's terribly dusty. I answer, "No, that is where the air goes when we breathe it out." She thought about that one a second. "Where do the air comes from?" This one she's familiar with, I reply "The air vents in the floor, remember?" Light bulb goes off, "Oh yeah!" And she giggles. But then she pondered this new found information for a bit. So I had to explain to her that the air comes up through the holes from the air conditioner downstairs, comes through the floor and goes up into the intake vent. Phew!
But wait, there's more. Yesterday in the car she asked, "Mommy, do all people's houses has a garage?" Odd question, but OK, I'll go with it. "No, not all houses have garages. Some do and some don't. And some have them next to the house." She was good with that for a few minutes. But then, "Do PopPop's house has a garage?" She knows the answer to this one! "I don't know, what do you think? Does he have a garage?" Another giggle, "Yes, that's where he puts his car!" Tricky, this one.
Today, on the way home from a most gorgeous day at the park she asked, "Mommy, how do peoples open the garage doors?" Oh boy, the garage doors again. (Really, shouldn't plumbing, heating/air and garage door openers be Jeff's department??? She couldn't have asked how Gap gets their clothes in the store or how the coffee maker makes coffee? I bet he'll get easy ones like "what does a moose say" or something ridiculously easy.) "Well, sweetie, some people use a remote control and some people pull them up with their hands." I knew what was coming next, "How do we open the garage door?" Again, she knows. lol "We use the button on our remote." Giggles. She thinks this is funny. (I do too, don't tell) "How does PopPop open his? And Grandma?" (Two different houses) "Both of them use a remote control and press the button." And then her curiosity was sated and she napped the rest of the way home.
I love this age. Just love it. I could answer questions like this all day long. I love to see the wheels turning in her head as things click. And I can't wait for the next curiosity to take form.
